Someone You Should Know - Ed Burkes Jr.

Edward Burks Jr. is passionate about keeping kids active and engaged!  This winter, as Dean of Students at Claymont Elementary School in the Brandywine School District, he started Saturday instructional tennis lessons with the help of Kelly Rasero (DD USTA Tennis Service Representative), Tennis Rocks Tutoring & Music Association, and Rodney Street Tennis & Tutoring.  Each Saturday there were at least 30 children attending the lessons. “It’s just a blessing to have a full-size gym and great volunteers willing to help put this together,” stated Ed.  Ed’s son, Alex, attended Free Tennis Friday lessons last summer where Ed met Jim Flesch.  Later they ran into each other while Ed was hitting with Alex on the Mt. Pleasant High School courts, and began talking about getting a tennis program going at Claymont. This year was a great success where many students and their parents can’t wait until their next time on the court. Ed said that he looks forward to providing even more tennis related activities to the students of the Brandywine School District.

Ed has a long history of getting students involved in extra-curricular activities.  Ten years ago he started the popular BSD Elementary Basketball League.  In addition he has developed the soccer program at Maple Lane.  His enthusiasm doesn’t stop at just sports.  He also runs a week-long STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) camp every summer for elementary students.  This, along with running an after school robotics club, shows his dedication to making learning fun.

Claymont Elementary School is fortunate to have such a hardworking, energetic, supporter of kids.  We couldn’t be happier that he and Alex have found tennis!
