Tennithon 2005

For junior tennis players in Delaware two big events mark the approaching spring and outdoor tennis activity ahead. On March 1st all the local schools begin their tennis season, and just before that the DE District Annual Tennithon is held at the DuPont Country Club. This year’s Tennithon attracted 80 juniors who came together for an overnight of non-stop tennis action. Play begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday night and continues through the night until 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Between court times there are video games to play, pizza to eat and movies to watch. Of the 80 players who started out the evening about 30 remained for the deadly midnight to 6 a.m. shift.

From midnight to 2 a.m. two drill courts kept players busy playing “Intensity”, “Six Man” and having serves clocked by a radar gun. Thanks to DuPont Pros Greg Barkley and John Trout for running those sessions. As the 6 a.m. closing time came, courts were still busy with tennis activity even though the hallways and lobby were littered with sleeping bags and some players who decided to catch a few winks before leaving for home. In the end hundreds of games of tennis were played, numerous pizzas were consumed and everyone had a chance to show off their tennis footwork by playing “Dance Dance Revolution”. All this fun helped raise approximately $3,000.00 for the DE District.
